Mesa is a systems composition commissioned for a performance of choreographer Justin Tornow's COMPANY at the American Dance Festival in 2022. Initially set to be unveiled in the summer of 2020, the global pandemic allowed for an extended period of conception. This temporal anomaly, a profound deviation from our societal understanding of time, became a powerful catalyst in the arrangement of the sounds.
I would not presume to put my own language on the piece overall. To fully absorb the expansive perspectives and rationale behind the creation of the larger entity, I recommend following the attached links, which will provide insight into the piece and the complex universe crafted by the gifted artists of COMPANY.
My role was dictated by a series of prompts and concepts from J. Tornow. Not limited too but including multiplicities of time as we experience it and the manner in which these arrhythmic timelines overlap, sculpt, erode and create new forms
This patch is a work for a supra timescale, a drone that was and will continue to be shaped by time and human intervention. Appearing in this form on June 21st 2022 in its original intention as the vibrational accompaniment for movement.
Although the piece's intention will perpetually be refined by time and my experience of it, I eagerly anticipate capturing its manifold expressions over time, offering an evolving array of perspectives and vantage points.
